The Sufficiency of Scripture

Psalm 19:7-14

"Let the words of my mouth, and the meditation of my heart, be acceptable in thy sight, O LORD, my strength, and my redeemer" (Psalm 19:14)

How can my words and thoughts be acceptable in the Lord's sight?

By immersing myself in the Word of God

  • "The law of the LORD is perfect" (v. 7) -- entire, complete, lacking nothing
  • "The testimony of the LORD is sure" (v. 7) -- faithful, reliable
  • "The statues of the LORD are right" (v. 8) -- straight
  • "The commandment of the LORD is pure" (v. 8) -- free from anything that adulterates or taints, unmixed
  • "The fear of the LORD is clean" (v. 9) -- ritualistic sense such as OT ceremonial law, free from flaws
  • "The judgements of the LORD are true [stability, trustworthiness] and righteous [revealing the rightness of God, one of His characteristics] altogether" (v. 9)

The benefits of the Word of God

  • "Converting the soul" (v. 7) -- restoring or reviving the soul
  • "Making wise the simple" (v. 7) -- wisdom will be given to the humble who submit to the Word
  • "Rejoicing the heart" (v. 8)
  • "Enlightening the eyes" (v. 8) -- obedience leads to understanding, the Word of God is a road map
  • "More to be desired are they than gold, yea, than much fine gold: sweeter also than honey and the honeycomb" (v. 10) -- source of sustenance and pleasure, richness
  • "Moreover by them is thy servant warned" (v. 11) -- warning signs, protection in the warning, don't have to learn everything the hard way if you listen to Scripture
  • "In keeping of them there is great reward" (v. 11)
  • "Who can understand his errors? Cleanse thou me from secret faults" (v. 12) -- protection from secret sins
  • "Keep back thy servant also from presumptuous sins; let them not have dominion over me: then shall I be upright, and I shall be innocent from the great transgression" (v. 13) -- keeps you from the bondage of sin

Do you want a heart free of guilt, remorse, and enslaving sin, instead filled with joy, peace, and satisfaction? Do you want a sound mind, filled with wisdom, understanding and discernment.
