Gospel of John

Part 4 -- 1:35-51

Come and See

MP3 Audio

Andrew was invited by Jesus to "come and see" (1:35-40).

Andrew brought his brother Simon to Jesus (1:41-42).

Jesus invited Philip to follow Him (1:43-44).

Philip invited Nathanael to "come and see" (1:45-51).

If we are to be effective witnesses to the people who know us best we must meet certain conditions

  • There must be a change in our manner of life, and this must be seen in our willingness to take second place in order that the ones to whom we are witnessing might see Jesus.
  • We must be wililng to let Jesus win them through us ("come and see") and not depend on our clever techniques or our arguments.
  • We can always begin with the question Jesus used, "What are you seeking?"

"I believe that at least eight things must be true of you if your witness to unbelievers is to be credible:

  • You must know that God's saving work has been done within your life and that it has been done forever.
  • You must know that you are a sinner and that in yourself you do not want to do God's will.
  • You must be surrended to God.
  • You must spend time with Jesus.
  • You must be grounded in the great truths of Scripture.
  • You must be planted if you are to bear fruit.
  • You must be willing to do hard work.
  • Everything you do must be characterized by love."

Gospel of John

Part 3 - (1:29-34)

The Lamb of God

MP3 Audio

God provided a covering for Adam and Eve after they sinned -- shed blood (Genesis 3:21).

Abraham told Isaac God would provide a lamb (Genesis 22:8).

The lamb of the passover (Exodus 12:3, 5-7, 12-14).

Christ is the final Passover Lamb (1 Corinthians 5:7).

The sacrificial lamb had to be perfect (Leviticus 22:17-24).

Christ as God's Lamb was without blemish -- perfect (2 Corinthians 5:21).

The blood of the sacrificial lamb was a covering for sin (Leviticus 17:11).

Christ's shed blood provides propitiation for sin.

(Romans 3:24-25): Being justified freely by his grace through the redemption that is in Christ Jesus: Whom God hath set forth to be a propitiation through faith in his blood, to declare his righteousness for the remission of sins that are past, through the forbearance of God;

(1 John 2:1-2) My little children, these things write I unto you, that ye sin not. And if any man sin, we have an advocate with the Father, Jesus Christ the righteous: And he is the propitiation for our sins: and not for ours only, but also for the sins of the whole world.

Gospel of John

Part 2 - 1:6-8, 15, 19-28

"Bearing Witness to the Light"

John was sent from God (1:6).

(Acts 1:8) "But ye shall receive power, after that the Holy Ghost is come upon you: and ye shall be witnesses unto me both in Jerusalem, and in all Judaea, and in Samaria, and unto the uttermost part of the earth."

(2 Corinthians 5:17-20a) "Therefore if any man be in Christ, he is a new creature: old things are passed away; behold, all things are become new. And all things are of God, who hath reconciled us to himself by Jesus Christ, and hath given to us the ministry of reconciliation; To wit, that God was in Christ, reconciling the world unto himself, not imputing their trespasses unto them; and hath committed unto us the word of reconciliation. Now then we are ambassadors for Christ,"

John was to be a witness of the Light (1:7-8).

(Philippians 2:14-16) "Do all things without murmurings and disputings: That ye may be blameless and harmless, the sons of God, without rebuke, in the midst of a crooked and perverse nation, among whom ye shine as lights in the world; Holding forth the word of life; that I may rejoice in the day of Christ, that I have not run in vain, neither laboured in vain."

John understood his position (1:15).

John based his witness on scripture (1:19-23).

John pointed others to Christ (1:24-28).
