Building a Godly Family

Part 3

MP3 Audio

(Deuteronomy 6)

"O that there were such an heart in them, that they would fear me, and keep all my commandments always, that it might be well with them, and with their children for ever!" (Deuteronomy 5:29)

1) The goal of every family: "And thou shalt love the LORD thy God with all thine heart, and with all thy soul, and with all thy might." (Deuteronomy 6:5)
  • Love is personal
  • Love is urgent
  • Love is demonstrated
  • Love is expressive
  • Love is unselfish
2) The process to accomplish the goal. (Deuteronomy 6:7-9)

Teachable moments

3) The legacy of a Godly family (Deuteronomy 6:20-25)

Building a Godly Family

Part 2

MP3 Audio

(Deuteronomy 5:16-21)

"O that there were such an heart in them, that they would fear me, and keep all my commandments always, that it might be well with them, and with their children for ever!" (Deuteronomy 5:29)

Six necessary ingredients in building a godly family in the area of relationships both inside and outside the home:

1) Respect authority.

"Honor thy father and mother..." (Deuteronomy 5:16a)

2) Value life.

"Thou shalt not kill." (Deuteronomy 5:17)

3) Value relationships.

"Neither shalt thou commit adultery." (Deuteronomy 5:18)

4) Respect others' property.

"Neither shalt thou steal." (Deuteronomy 5:19)

5) Always tell the truth.

"Neither shalt thou bear false witness against thy neighbor." (Deuteronomy 5:20)

6) Learn to be content.

"...Neither shalt thou covet..." (Deuteronomy 5:21)

Building a Godly Family

Part 1

MP3 Audio

(Deuteronomy 5:6-15)

"O that there were such an heart in them, that they would fear me, and keep all my commandments always, that it might be well with them, and with their children for ever!" (Deuteronomy 5:29)

1) God must be in control of our Home

"Thou shalt have none other gods before me." (Deuteronomy 5:7)

2) God must be correctly represented in our Home.

"Thou shalt not make thee any graven image...Thou shalt not bow down thyself unto them, nor serve them: for I the LORD thy God am a jealous God" (Deuteronomy 5:8a, 9a)

3) God must be respected in our Home.

"Thou shalt not take the name of the LORD thy God in vain..." (Deuteronomy 5:11a)

4) God's day of worship must be honored in our Home.

"Keep the sabbath day to sanctify it..." (Deuteronomy 5:12a)

"Here am I, send me"

(Isaiah 6:5-8)

How can I get to a place of usefulness for the Lord?

1) See the Lord as He Is (6:1-4)
  • The Lord reveals Himself to us to make us useful for His purposes
  • In response to this revelation of God we see Isaiah come to a whole new understanding about himself and the Lord God Almighty

2) Respond to Holiness of the Lord (6:5)

Isaiah’s response to seeing the Lord:

Woe is me!”

  • Isaiah had pronounced six woes upon the people of Judah in chapter five – now he pronounces a woe upon himself
  • Isaiah realized how far short he fell of God’s glory – and how gracious God’s salvation is compared to the debt we owe

I am undone

  • The Hebrew word for “undone” is damah – it is also translated “silence” and “perish” in other places in the OT
  • Seeing the Lord high and lifted up left Isaiah speechless and feeling as if he was utterly inadequate

I am a man of unclean lips

  • Notice Isaiah doesn’t say he was a man of an unclean heart – he knew the Lord in salvation – he had unclean lips
  • Apparently after coming into the presence of the Lord he had to deal with some sin previously unconfessed but now revealed
  • Isaiah was preaching a message of righteousness and he needed to be living a righteous life so that he would not be standing in self-righteous hypocrisy before those hearing his message
  • We must witness to the message of the righteousness of Christ in meekness, not in hypocrisy of self-righteousness

I dwell in the midst of a people of unclean lips

  • Isaiah realized he was much more like the people he was prophesying to, rather than having much in common with a Holy God

3) Purge yourself of sin (6:6-7)

  • The seraphim came with the fiery hot coal and burned away the sin from the lips of Isaiah making him fit for service
  • We must fan the flame of God’s Spirit in our lives with the Word of God so that its red hot fire will burn away the dross in our lives that we may be useful for the Lord’s work

4) Answer the call (6:8)

  • Will Isaiah’s fear or sense of unworthiness prevent him from heeding the call of the Almighty?
  • No, he voluntarily offers himself with the right attitude of heart
