A Convenient Explanation

Matthew 27:57-28:15

"Skeptics must provide more than alternative theories to the Resurrection; they must provide first-century evidence for those theories" (Gary Habermas).

"The simple faith of the Christian who believes in the Resurrection is nothing compared to the credulity of the sceptic who will accept the wildest and most improbable romances rather than admit the plain witness of historical certainties.  The difficulties of belief may be great; the absurdities of unbelief are greater" (George Hanson, The Resurrection and the Life).

The Resurrection is not the only important subject in which people have endeavored to come with convenient explanations:

  • There is no God!  How do I know this?
    • Because of all the evil and suffering in the world.
      • God's explanation: Romans 5:12
    • The scientific theory of evolution has proven no need for God.
      • God's explanation: Genesis 1:1, 3:17; Romans 8:20-22
    • Unfairness in society
      • God's solution: Isaiah 11:1-4; Revelation 21:1-4
  • There is no need for salvation.  I am a decent person and I know other morally good people even better than me.
    • God's explanation and warning: Romans 3:10, 19-23; Matthew 5:20; Luke 9:18-26; John 3:36

Even believers try to explain away their lack of obedience and faithfulness in their relationship to God

  • My circumstances are unique (Luke 9:57-62)
  • The timing is not right (Ephesians 5:14-16)
  • Other people in my life are holding me back (1 Peter 4:12-19)

All the City Was Moved

Matthew 21:1-11

What moved Jesus:

  • Jesus could see the coming destruction of Jerusalem

Luke 19:41-44: "And when he was come near, he beheld the city, and wept over it, Saying, If thou hadst known, even thou, at least in this thy day, the things which belong unto thy peace!  but now they are hid from thine eyes.  For the days shall come upon thee, that thine enemies shall cast a trench about thee, and compass thee round, and keep thee in on every side, And shall lay thee even with the ground, and thy children within thee; and they shall not leave in thee one stone upon another; because thou knewest not the time of thy visitation."

Have you been moved to worship Jesus by a correct understanding of Him?

  • You exist for Jesus; He doesn't exist for you
  • Following popular opinion about what God is doing is usually dangerous
  • The source of our discontentment is not a superficial symptom, it is a deep-rooted problem
  • Would you continue to follow Jesus if your life fell apart?

Gospel of John

Part 9 - (4:1-26)

Living Water

  • Jesus inconvenienced Himself when reaching out to sinners
  • Jesus did not let individuals' attitudes keep Him from reaching out with the truth
  • Jesus sought out people where they were and brought them along to where they needed to be
  • Jesus confromnted people with their sin before giving them the remedy
  • Jesus often taught others about the character of God in order to bring them to a proper understanding of salvation

How can I offer living water to thirsty souls?

  • Embrace inconvenience in your schedule
  • Overcome obstacles in attitudes
  • Be willing to meet people where they are
  • Confront people with their true problem
  • Instruct them with scripture

Gospel of John

Part 8 - (3:22-3:36)

Six Unique Things About Jesus Christ

Christ's uniqueness demands me to humble myself to repentence for salvation.

Christ's uniqueness demands my humble, absolute loyalty in lifelong service.

Christ's uniqueness demands my humble obedience to His Word.

Christ's uniqueness demands my humble understanding of my worthiness.

F.B. Meyer once said, "I used to think God's gifts were on shelves one above the other, and that the taller we grew in Christian character the easier we could reach them.  I now find that God's gifts are on shelves one beneath the other.  It is not a question of growing taller but of stooping lower; that we have to go down, always down, to get His best gifts."

  • Jesus is the Christ
  • Jesus is the Bridegroom
  • Jesus is Lord
  • Jesus is the Word
  • Jesus is full of the Spirit
  • Jesus is the only Savior
